You're right Sean about cell phone usage to determine location. I worked for an auto insurance company as a claims adjuster and we had the ability to tap into cellphone tower records from the cellphone carriers to identify details of accidents by claimants to weed out false claims. We used the cellphone on file, the vehicle's GPS system and downloaded data from the cars computer to determine what happened based on what the vehicle reported via the codes and the times the codes were initiated. Most companies already have your data either directly or indirectly through a data broker. Also if you are on any social media platform your data is already for sale why do you think it is free to join those platforms.

They're taking a cue from the companies that do the same thing with smart phones and apps. These companies are able to scale profits without having to scale costs at the same rate. It creates a whole new kind of post-capitalist economy, characterized by never before seen levels of concentrated wealth. The automakers want to be included among the new Haves, rather than the Have Nots (like the rest of us). Unfortunately, I don't think this new system is stable enough to last long enough for it to really matter which camp the automakers land in. When the rich finish vacuuming up the last few pennies, there won't be enough left over for anyone else to buy anything.

The difference between cell phone location and data and a vehicle are distinct. Cell phones can be turned off, placed in a faraday bag or adjust location and data sharing services or just not taken. Vehicle data is more comprehensive, cannot be turned off or blocked with a faraday bag and much more obscure in how much and what is being collected or who the data is being shared with. We also don't have high dollar insurance on phones compared to vehicles that can go up significantly or be canceled by data sharing like vehicles.

Consumers are not on board with giving up their data? That ship has sailed. Sean is right, as long as you have a smartphone you and your data are being tracked because you are the product.

It is one thing to give up your data in exchange for “free” product. It is a different thing for you to pay a lot for the product and then find out the manufacturer is leeching additional revenue off you but not giving you anything in exchange. They should have offered “free 10 point inspection” of some other BS that would not cost them much and people would agree.
